Mark your calendars now for a family friendly and fun-filled weekend of activity, competition and demonstrations November 17th through 19th at Six Bends Harley-Davidson in Fort Myers (just off I-75 at exit 131). The Lee County Sheriff’s Youth Activities League (SYAL) will join the rolling thunder and aerial feats at the annual Hogs & Air Dogs national dock jumping event by featuring our own young competitors Saturday morning and afternoon in Top Rocker Field, right next to the dock jumping site. Archers, ages 6 through 17, from seven area SYAL-sponsored programs will take aim to win trophies, medals and other prizes in our annual year-end tournament. “We’re thankful to this year’s organizers of the Hogs & Air Dogs event to allow us to hold our competition that weekend,” said Lieutenant Larry King, Executive Director of SYAL. “This will give our youth a chance to see, interact and enjoy the canines in competition while allowing those attending that event to watch and encourage our archers who work so hard to excel in their chosen sport,” he said. The youth are divided into four divisions based on their level of experience and ability. Winners are awarded for top scores, grouping and a Challenge event for top shooter. In our most recent final’s competition, the top shooter scored a perfect 60 – six bullseyes! The best team is also recognized with the traveling Challenge Team Cup.
Meanwhile, back at the dock, you’ll get to see various breeds and sizes of dogs run, jump and splash in pursuit of glory as they fetch, chase and catch in three days of action from 10a to 4p each day. Hogs & Air Dogs benefits the Gulf Coast Humane Society, a local non-profit animal welfare organization which rescues, cares and finds loving homes for hundreds of dogs and cats each year in Lee County. A “no-kill” facility, the Gulf Coast Humane Society is funded only by individual and corporate donations, grants and fundraising events like this one.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office will have displays and demonstrations from various specialty units over the weekend and patrons will be encouraged to come out and drop off toys for the annual Chick-fil-A drive which will be launched that weekend, too! Toy donations are distributed by deputies each Christmas season to needy families across Lee County in partnership with each of the Chick-fil-A restaurants in Lee and Collier counties.
